- Abstract
This article is a reaction to the position expressed by Emil Pain (No. 5 2016) that raise of Islamism is the equivalent of demodernization. The main arguments against this position are the following ones. First, it’s not correct to identify Islamism with fundamentalism and jihadism. This movement is heterogeneous with various parts having different strategies. Second, the values of islamists are mixed: both modern and anti-modern with many similarities to the followers of protestant Reformation. Third, the way to modern society is objectively difficult and contradictive. It cannot be reduced to import of best practices from other countries. And it’s typical not only for the Islamic world. The understanding of the phenomenon of Islamism as complicated and ambiguous is necessary to elaborate efficient policy counteracting youth radicalization.
