Abstract
This paper analyzes the negative aspects of social mobility in the city of Makhachkala. Considering the example of a group of offi cially unemployed workers and builders, the author studies aimed at social climbing life strategies of citizens who are on the lower social strata. Also barriers of social mobility are reviewed such as clanism and corruption. Wide distribution these practices in different areas of Makhachkala society not only makes diffi cult the vertical social mobility for people who do not have suffi cient social capital (infl uential relatives with a high level of economic prosperity), but also slows down the processes of modernization. However, for the lower class of the Dagestani society, represented by Makhachkala “Exchange” unskilled workers, social elevators are not covered completely. The study identifi ed two basic models of vertical mobility typical for this social group: 1) the increase of their professional level – in local terms, a jump from laborers to the artisans: 2) the creation of prerequistites for hogher education of children
