Abstract
We offer our readers a discussion around the monograph of Doctors of Historical Sciences A.V. Repnikov (Moscow) and O. A. Milevsky (Surgut) "The Two Lives of Lev Tikhomirov" (Moscow: Academia, 2011. 560 p.). It is quite natural that the discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of a scientific book entails a polemic around the key problems that are addressed in it in one way or another. In this case, it is not only the amazing life metamorphosis of L. A. Tikhomirov (1852-1923), which inevitably attracts researchers of extreme trends of Russian thought and practice who have actually gone very far "to different corners". And not only the mystery of individual apostasy and neophytism, as well as the transformation of one system of values and beliefs into another. It is also a conflict between ideas that fascinate entire "parties" and human nature, which is irreducible to ideology - the plot, so far, may be, more developed by Russian literature, but undoubtedly worthy of the attention of historians. Finally, the editorial board assumes that the discussion about Lev Tikhomirov's "two lives" is a kind of touchstone for its organizers, participants, and, ultimately, for our readers. Will we become like the characters in Chekhov's plays, created in the heyday of ideological orientation, even when communicating with each other, still not hear each other?
