- Abstract
The article analyzes the data of one of the meetings of the Anglo-Russian Literary Society, where Ms Toulmin Smith made a presentation regarding the image of Russia in the English novels of the 1890s. This presentation is notable for being «the first discussion of Russian themes in English fiction» (A. G. Cross) and as such, it describes a number of important properties of the Russian myth in the English fiction of the period. Besides, the study of the attitudes of the speaker and the debaters towards the subject reveals some peculiarities of the perception of this myth by the members of the Anglo-Russian Literary Society, that determine both their vision of the Russian Theme in English literature and the English image of Russia as a whole.
