- Abstract
The article discusses the first references to the life and work of A. S. Pushkin in the Spanish press of 1820–1850s. Some of them appeared during the Russian poet’s lifetime — in 1824, 1827 and 1831. It is important to note that in all these reports Pushkin’s name is written in German transcription, «Puschkin», in contrast to the later French version, «Pouchkine», that emerges in the Spanish periodicals as late as 1838, in the poet’s obituary. This observation suggests that in the 1820–1830s, when Russia and Spain had no diplomatic relations, Germany served as the mediator country; later this role was taken by France.
